Photographs of Deliberate and Accidental Cave/Karst Vandalism

UnVandalism Calgardup Cave Click on the picture for a 83Kb JPG photo of what WAS one of the most beautiful displays of crystal encrusted straws anywhere! This area is totally devistated - not one straw remains. A photo showing the current situation appears below. This photograph was taken in Calgardup Cave in the South-West of WA in 1903 or before by an unknown photographer. It was scanned from a postcard kindly loaned for the purpose by a Western Australian collector of postcards, Mike Kouwen. See the PostCard Page for more old postcard cave photos.
Vandalism Calgardup Cave Click on the picture for a 63Kb JPG photo of what IS the worst case of blatant vandalism that I am aware of. This photograph was matched to the area of the postcard in the previous photo of Calgardup Cave!!! AARRRRRRHHHH! The photographs are not exactly matching as the exact direction of the photographs are not the same but the large stalagmite in the lower left corner of the photographs matches exactly with the one in the postcard. Other features in the postcard were matched as well such as the obvious ridge in the floor in the mid-ground of the postcard. What a tragedy.

Vandalism in a Chinese Cave Stalactite specimens of BLUE ARAGONITE which have just been discovered in China ?? (16 Jul 2003) Fantastic and Sad all in one. They were "mined" so they could be sold. What a natural wonder this cave must have been !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Makes the blue stalactites at Cliefden Caves NSW look a bit small and insignificant. Notes from Garry K. Smith

Vandalism Buckner's Cave USA Click on the picture for a 111Kb JPG photo of some of the worst spray paint vandalism in a cave!! Photo was taken in Buckner's Cave in Monroe County, Indiana by Chris Kollmar. Chris indicates that the spray paint obscures a once present "historical" signature and date "L.V. Cushing 1775". Was it this very early signature that prompted more signatures and led to todays disaster?
