Photographs taken on the 1996 WASG Kimberley Expedition

Brian Vine - Leader

A full report of the Kimberley expedition will be published once the maps and reports have been finalised. Meanwhile here are a few images of the expedition members having fun. Also some of the caves that we were fortunate to find/visit.

The expedition was highly successful with 72 caves being visited and about 60+ of those caves were not previously recorded!! Hope you enjoy the photos.

Here's a map of Window Cave showing three of the photo's from below.

Any queries please email rauleigh@iinet.net.au

John bogged in the river crossing Click on the picture for a JPG photo of John Cugley getting bogged on the way to Old Napier Downs cave. We were a tad overloaded and John tried to help Brian out of the water and got well bogged himself.

View from Window Cave 25m up the reef. Click on the picture for a JPG photo looking out onto the plain from Window Cave. The window is about 25m above the plain level. We had entered via the top entrance and abseiled out the window.

Flowstone in Window Cave. Click on the picture for a JPG photo of one of the larger formations in Window Cave. This small cave contained some excellent decoration including a number of cave shields/stegamites? (one photo below!)

Large Shield/Stegamite from Window Cave. Click on the picture for a JPG photo of a LARGE shield/stegamite taken in Window Cave. This formation was thought to be a flowstone until we walked behind it to find it was free standing and had the medial crack along its top edge. It is by far the largest shield/stegamite found in Western Australia to date. Photo by and © to Rauleigh Webb.

All expedition members. Click on the picture for a JPG photo of all of the expedition members in The Tunnel (a pseudo tourist cave) in the Napier Ranges. They are from rear left:- Donna Cavlovic, David Woods("Woodsie"), Justin Minchin, Adam Minchin, Michael Sander, Ian Collette, Edwin Kirkwood, John Cugley and Rob Foulds (cracking a "joke"). Then from the front left Rauleigh Webb, Veronica Weber, Yvonne , Reto Zollinger and Brian Vine.

Woodsie and Donna swimming in OND. Click on the picture for a JPG photo of Woodsie and Donna enjoying the swim in OND. During the expedition over 1.1km of Old Napier Downs cave was surveyed - most of it swimming! Photo by and © to Edwin Kirkwood - taken with a waterproof happy snappy!

Formations in the dry passageway of OND. Click on the picture for a JPG photo of the main dry passageway in Old Napier Downs cave. The large gour pools in this "dry" entrance passage holds back the lake that is the swim for the remainder of the cave.

Geikie Gorge. Click on the picture for a JPG photo of the tourist barge on Geikie Gorge. This was the last area we visited for only a few days but it still provided some excellent caving. The boat ride is required recreation! Photo by and © to Brian Vine

Formations Little Lennard Cave. Click on the picture for a JPG photo of some excellent decoration in Little Lennard Cave. This small cave had a very tight entrance squeeze and hence only three members visited the cave. Photo by and © to Mick Sander with Edwin's camera.
