The two arrows on the picture indicate where this stalagmite was glued back
together. It is unfortunately right in the middle of the trail that leads
from the cave to the main ladder/prusik exit point. As a result the
stalagmite was used as a reference point for determining the "Limits of
Acceptable Change" on the cave following the introduction of a permit system. Unfortunately within one year of the introduction the stalagmite had been fractured through the middle. It was glued back together using silastic. This repair (although used successfully in other sites) did not hold. Within a few months the stalagmite was again found to be broken. A second repair was undertaken this time using Bondcrete. The photograph above was taken just after this repair. After a further 16 months this repair appears to be holding.
As for the LAC - is this level of damage acceptable or should we (the cave
manager - that is) be implementing tougher management strategies. To
